Are you looking for a Optometrist dream job? Are you an adventurous type? Love the outdoors? Love challenging work that varies day-by-day, interacting with cultures you won't experience in the Lower 48? Not afraid of a little cold weather?  This can be a perfect opportunity for a new graduate looking for experience or an older doctor looking to supplement practice income.

If the idea of working in a challenging environment seeing patients in some of the most remote regions of the country sounds appealing to you, read on!

Our optometric group provides eye care to all rural regions of Alaska, from Ketchikan to Barrow, Nome to Valdez.... and hundreds of small villages in between. You will be traveling with an optician who will handle all dispensing duties, as well as assist in the patient check-in and check-out process. All administrative work and billing is handled for you. You make your travel arrangements in coordination with the optician, so that you can travel and work on a schedule that suits you best. Trips are generally 10-12 days long and you will usually spend two days in each location. Travel is typically by small commercial aircraft (although you will also be on snowmobile, sled, boat, 4-wheeler or track vehicle, depending on the season).  You will receive a generous travel allowance (which can be provided in advance) to cover your local travel. Also a round-trip ticket allowance to Anchorage is also provided.

We supply your large exam equipment (i.e. phoropter, portable stand, handheld slitlamp, contact lens trials, lensometer). You just bring your hand-held equipment (retinoscope, ophthamoscope, BIO, etc).

Expect to make over $10K for only 10-12 days of work. The rest of your time off is just that... time off. Stay and enjoy all that Alaska has to offer (fishing, hunting, hiking, winter sports) or spend the extra time at home with your family. If you want more work (double trips), we might be able to accommodate that.

We are an equal opportunity employer; we do require that you are able to handle the physical challenges of working in rugged terrain with limited facilities. Although you may sometimes stay in rustic hotels or inns, you might just as easily be working out of a school or city office with no running water. Think indoor camping as the best description.
